(This test is completely unrelated to the test of CLIENT programs.)
I'm looking for people to test a new Zephyr server between now and
(say) Saturday.
The procedure:
* As root, run
/etc/athena/zhm prometheus thor multics
or
/mit/zephyr/bin/zhm prometheus thor multics
The order of the names of the servers doesn't matter.
* Log out and log back in, or kill and restart any processes
you have that would register subscriptions with the Zephyr
server. (This includes zwgc.)
* Use Zephyr normally. (Or maybe a bit heavier than normal.)
How to revert to normal:
* Reboot. Or,
* Run "/etc/athena/zhm" as root (without arguments).
The ramifications of testing:
* Since you are talking to a set of Zephyr servers other than
the regular Athena servers, you won't be able to communicate
with people (or services) using the regular servers. This
includes mail, login, and OLC notifications (though the
last should fall back to "write"), as well as personal and
consult-instance messages and so forth. (This isn't
necessarily a bad thing, if you like peace and quiet while
working. :-)
* Because there is only one hostmanager running on a machine
at a time, the above will be true for anyone else using the
machine. Therefore, DON'T DO THIS ON PUBLIC MACHINES,
unless you can be very certain that you'll reboot the
machine before someone else uses it. Semi-private machines
ought to have a notice somewhere saying that they're doing
testing.
(If you don't understand the first two, don't test the new server.)
* The results from "zctl ret" won't be sorted; it's faster for
the server to do it this new way. (If enough people
complain, "zctl" may be fixed to do the sorting, but I don't
consider it a high priority at the moment.)
* Unauthenticated "zlocate" should work for finding
net-visible people.
* It probably won't be too visible, but using the new clients
may get a slightly faster response from the server.
Why you should help test:
* The currently-deployed servers are too slow, and should be
replaced.
* Untested code won't get installed.
* I can't test it thoroughly myself.
I'd like to get a lot of people using these servers over the next
couple of days, to exercise it a bit.
Please report any problems you find to bug-zephyr.
