IS&T is pleased to announce the latest software snapshot for incoming
students.
For the three IS&T supported platforms, Macintosh, Windows, and Linux, a
Student Bundle has been created which consists of a snapshot of current
versions of recommended IS&T distributed software. The bundles are
available for download from the IS&T Software Download page:
http://web.mit.edu/software/
For those with slow connections or who are not yet on the network, a CD
containing all three bundles together with with "Getting Connected"
documentation is available at the Computing Helpdesk Walk-in center.
The creation of downloadable Student Bundles this year allows students
to
get updates of the latest recommended software and the latest versions
continually. Previously the CDs were produced once a year. This time
around
we expect to update the CDs periodically through the year.

When we announced the Snapshot Release effort, we planned to add a
separate
tab off the Software Download page for the documentation and bundles.
Over
the summer, we produced that version and tested it with users. We found
that adding a single software bundle entry to the per-platform tabs was
a
simpler, more obvious, and more usable design.
