Good afternoon,

MIT received site licensed upgrades for Dreamweaver 8 in early
October. The Dreamweaver 8 Release Team has begun the effort to
deliver the standalone product Dreamweaver 8, not the full Studio 8
suite. The team has begun testing the product for compatibility
within the MIT environment with the goal of establishing a support
statement, preparing documentation and making the software available
to the MIT community late fall / early winter.

Unlike past releases, there will be a nominal fee for obtaining
Dreamweaver 8. IS&T will no longer support Dreamweaver MX (versions
6.0 & 6.1) past December 31, 2005.

IS&T does not recommend that MIT users upgrade to Dreamweaver 8 until
the team has had a chance to fully evaluate it. Even if the software
proves fit for MIT, note that the software has higher system
requirements than previous versions of the product and will not work
on versions of the Mac OS prior to 10.3.

Please note that if you have Dreamweaver 8 installed, then use the
Archive and Install option to upgrade to Mac OS X 10.3 or 10.4,
Dreamweaver may not launch. Macromedia has published a fix for this
problem at
http://www.macromedia.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=tn_18933

Some new features of note for MIT users :

* Increased CSS support with unified panels, visual aids, improved
design view rendering, and layout visualization
* Docked panels for Mac
* Increased support for web standards
* Increased support for accessibility standards
* Cross-Browser Validation
* Standards Validation
* Zoom / Select / Hand / Guide tools
* Background FTP
* Code Collapse
* More Pre-built CSS Templates and Designs

To learn more about these and other features, please visit the
features overview from Macromedia:

For more information on Dreamweaver and the release effort, see the
Dreamweaver 8 Release Notebook at
http://mit.edu/swrt/releases/dreamweaver/. If you have any questions,
suggestions, or if you would like to volunteer as a tester, please
contact the team via email at

Thanks!

Sincerely,

Margaret Wong
