Good Day,

We are pleased to announce full support for Red Hat Enterprise Linux
4.0, Red Hat's premier, enterprise grade version of the Linux operating
system, the successor to Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3.0.

Customers have asked IS&T to support the Linux Operating System, and to
keep support current with the latest version so as to keep up to date
with new features and support for new hardware.

Notable Features of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4.0 include:

Based on the latest Kernel, version 2.6
New Network Manager GUI to configure Network
New Plug and Play hardware support system.
     SELinux (Security Enhanced Linux) support
     Firefox
     New OpenOffice Version
     Evolution 2.0
     GNOME 2.8
     Updated OpenSSH
     Standardized ABI (Application Binary Interface)
X server from X.org replaces server from the XFree86 project.
New versions of most IS&T supplied applications:
           Zephyr
           LPRng
Acrobat Reader (jump up to version 7)

When you migrate from RHEL 3 to RHEL 4, you will need to update your
MIT apps because new binaries are needed for RHEL 4. You may also need
to refresh your Kerberos configuration because the Red Hat Kerberos
update may overwrite the MIT configs.

In response to customer demand IS&T now supports and offers for
download Linux Pine based on the Athena-supported Pine client.

For a complete list of new features, please reference the Red Hat
Enterprise Linux 4.0 release notes:
http://www.redhat.com/software/rhel/notes/ or the product overview:

visit the Red Hat Enterprise Linux site:
http://www.redhat.com/software/rhel/.

Broader RHEL license, and slightly broader support:

Previously MIT was only licensed for the RHEL AS and WS products, with
the restriction that personally owned systems could only run WS. MIT
has a broader site license that lets all members of the MIT community
run all four products, AS, ES, WS and Desktop without restrictions on
what can run on personal systems. As a practical matter, IS&T fully
supports and recommends AS and WS, while offering only best effort
support for ES and Desktop. Although we expect ES and Desktop to be
quite similar to AS and WS, we wanted to be clear in setting
expectations of support.

Known Issues:

         - The Proxim Orinoco Silver 802.11b wireless card does not work
         - Text mode network configuration requires reboot
         - Confusing Red Hat Network registration prompts
         - Upgrading takes a long time compared to installing
         - Upgrades MUST be made with the same distribution or you WILL
lose data (AS to AS not WS to AS, for example.)
         - GSSAPI Kerberos Ticket forwarding in OpenSSH is no longer
available,
	even with a re-compile.
-OpenAFS support will be ready soon. Validating OpenAFS for
RHEL 4 has taken longer than we hoped. We expect to fully
support OpenAFS in a matter of weeks. If you have need AFS,
stay with RHEL 3 for now.
