Good afternoon.
Starting tonight, April 29, Apple will begin selling copies of Mac OS X
10.4 "Tiger", the newest version of Mac OS X. Tiger has many new
features such as Spotlight, Dashboard, Automator and Safari 2.0; Apple
provides extensive information at http://www.apple.com/macosx/.
While Information Services and Technology has been able to conduct
preliminary tests on pre-release versions, we will focus our efforts on
testing the suite of supported applications on the shipping version of
Mac OS X 10.4 and documenting compatibility issues, vendor updates and
possible work-arounds.
Information Services and Technology is a licensee of Mac OS X; we are
authorized to distribute Mac OS X 10.4 licenses to MIT faculty and
staff. Due to the limited number of Mac OS X 10.4 licenses available,
IS&T is working on updated distribution guidelines to provide the most
value for MIT. IS&T plans to announce updated guidelines and begin
accepting Mac OS X 10.4 license requests by mid-May.
Until we are able to finish our evaluation, ramp up support and make
recommendations for Mac OS X 10.4, support for Mac OS X 10.4 will be
limited primarily to MIT community members that purchase Macintosh
computers with Mac OS X 10.4 pre-installed.
Questions regarding Mac OS X 10.4 should be directed to the Software
Release team at swrt@mit.edu.
