------------------------------------------------
Good day:
IS&T is happy to announce support for OpenOffice.org 1.1.0 under Red Hat
Enterprise Linux 3.0. This marks the first IS&T release effort for
OpenOffice.org. With the support of OpenOffice.org, Linux joins Windows
and MacOS in featuring an IS&T-supported office productivity suite.
Customers have long requested such support from IS&T under Linux.
At this time there are no plans to pursue a software release effort for
OpenOffice.org on Windows or MacOS. Those platforms already feature
Microsoft Office as the supported office productivity suite.
(Microsoft Office is available through the Microsoft Campus Agreement
for certain departments that have opted into the agreement. For more
information on the Campus Agreement see
<http://web.mit.edu/ist/services/software/msca.html>)
About OpenOffice.org
-----------------------
OpenOffice.org is the name of both the product and the open source
project that creates and maintains that product. The OpenOffice.org
product (commonly called just "OpenOffice") is an office productivity
suite for creating documents, spreadsheets, drawings, and
presentations. For details about OpenOffice.org see the web site:
http://www.openoffice.org
Notable features:
---------------------------
OpenOffice.org is a work-alike for Microsoft Office. It has an
imperfect, but ever-improving ability to read and write files in .doc,
.xls, and .ppt formats.
Known Issues
----------------------
Based on client concerns about interoperability between OpenOffice.org
for Linux and Microsoft Office, IS&T tested various document
compatibilities during the Linux OpenOffice.org Software Release
Effort. We found that different versions of Microsoft Office have
different issues with the fidelity of documents exchanged.
The key findings from IS&T's extremely rudimentary testing of
interoperability with Microsoft Office include:
* Not all features are implemented.
* Fonting and spacing is rarely translated properly.
We have produced a stock answer pointing to the OpenOffice.org
documentation that will be useful in showing similarities and
differences between OpenOffice.org and Microsoft Office. That
documentation does a good job of helping explain what is and is not
supported in file exchange between the two systems.

How to obtain OpenOffice.org
----------------------------------
OpenOffice.org 1.1.0 ships with Red Hat Enterprise Linux version 3, and
is installed by default. There is no special installation effort
needed.
