Good afternoon,

In response to requests from various faculty members and Departments,
Information Services and Technology (IS&T) is pleased to announce the start
of a release effort to provide support for e-mail and calendaring
synchronization using Palm OS-based handhelds and smartphones.

The release team will provide support for SnapperMail 2.1, an e-mail client
from Snapperfish Ltd. and SyncML from Synthesis AG, which enables TechTime
calendar access and synchronization without the requirement of a cable
attachment. E-mail access and calendar synchronization are the two key
functions that clients have requested support from IS&T for handhelds and
smartphones.

The release team will test SnapperMail and SyncML on several devices and
report on their suitability, as well as create documentation, training
plans and support mechanisms for the MIT community.

Once support is in place for Palm OS devices, IS&T will investigate
providing support for devices that are PocketPC-based.

Support for SnapperMail and SyncML is expected to be in place on February
1, 2005. Members of the MIT community can attend an IAP event sponsored by
the release team that takes place on January 26, 2005, in the N42 Demo Center.

The Mobility Device Release Team will provide updates throughout the
process. For more information on the release effort, see the Mobility
Devices release notebook:
http://web.mit.edu/swrt/releases/mobiledevices/. To contact the team with
questions or feedback, send e-mail to palm-release@mit.edu.
