Subject: Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3.0 Release Effort Underway Announcement 

Good Afternoon, 

We are pleased to announce that the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3.0 release effort is moving forward at full speed now that we have a signed agreement with Red Hat. Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3.0 is Red Hat's premier, enterprise grade version of the Linux operating system. It is the successor of Red Hat 
Linux 9, which the vendor stopped supporting on April 30, 2004. We are working to release Red Hat Enterprise 3.0 to the MIT Community as quickly as possible.

This release marks the first IS&T release effort for the Linux operating system.

Notable Features of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3.0 include: 

-Native Posix Thread Library:
A new high-performance multi-threading capability provides improved performance for multi-threaded applications 
-Based on Linux 2.4.21 kernel:
Red Hat Enterprise Linux uses the latest stable Linux kernel with numerous additions from the Linux 2.5/2.6 kernels.
-Enhanced security:
Includes several new security features. 
-Improved compiler/tools: 
Includes GCC 3.2 and debugging/profiling tools.
-Enhanced networking:
Includes numerous features to improve stability & performance.
