In response to requests by Linux users on campus, Information Services
and Technology is pleased to announce support and an MIT-tailored
installer for the OpenAFS client for stand-alone Red Hat Linux 9. This
OpenAFS client gives authenticated, secure access to the Institute's AFS
file service infrastructure as well as access to the world-wide AFS file
service infrastructure.
Staff from across MIT collaborated on the stand-alone Linux OpenAFS
Release Team to provide and support this client. The team worked
together with the MIT community to release a product that we anticipate
will meet the needs of the growing number of stand-alone Linux users
on campus who wish to gain access to AFS.

for Linux.
Who Should Use and Why
---------------------------------------
Customers with non-Athena Red Hat 9 Linux desiring access to files in
AFS should install this software.
Other New and Supported Features
--------------------------------------
This is the first installer provided by IS&T to allow non-Athena Linux
users at MIT to gracefully utilize the AFS file service.
This distribution contains proper configuration to enable authenticated
access to AFS cells ATHENA.MIT.EDU authentication realm.
Known Issues
--------------------
Customers familiar with software available under Athena in AFS
"lockers" can expect SOME, not all, of that software to work. At issue:
Some is license-restricted only to Athena systems. Others require tools
that are only part of a comprehensive Athena installation.
Individual locker maintainers are responsible for addressing this
issue. If you do not experience the behavior you expect from a
particular locker, notify the locker maintainer. (The maintainer should
have put a README file in the top level of the locker providing contact
information.)
