Subject: Microsoft released SP4 for Windows 2000

Good afternoon,
With the release of Service Pack 4 for Windows 2000 (SP4) by Microsoft
about two weeks ago, Information Systems has begun the process of testing
and evaluating the Service Pack in the MIT environment. As this is a major
patch for a widely supported operating system, Information Systems will be
supporting it. The value we can add is to test and share a list of known
issues to the MIT community. In that effort, we would greatly appreciate
your assistance in reporting any problems (and solutions) you have or will
uncover with SP4 and the applications and services you use.
We will maintain the list of problems and fixes on the Windows 2000 SP4
Release Notebook at:
http://web.mit.edu/swrt/releases/sp4/
The preliminary findings show that SP4 works for the most part on stand
alone Windows 2000 Professional workstations. SP4 has caused minor problems
with older versions of Kerberos for Windows and KLP. Installing the latest
version has resolved all of the problems to date. You can check out the
release notebook for addition information concerning the known issues and
their fixes. If you choose to install SP4 before a recommendation is made,
please test it on one or two machines before deploying to more machines.
We will report back our findings in about a month
SP4 contains over 600 additional bug fixes and security enhancements. A
complete list is available at:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=327194
A list of known issue with SP4 is available at:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=813432
You can download SP4 using Windows Update or from the Microsoft Download
Center at:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/downloads/servicepacks/sp4/default.asp
If you have any questions or discover any problems with SP4, please send
e-mail to swrt@mit.edu.
Thanks,
Jonathan
