Subject: MIT WebMail Support Announcement
Greetings!
Information Systems is pleased to announce support for MIT WebMail, which
provides a convenient and secure way to read, reply to, send, and delete current
email using almost any web browser, almost anywhere in the world. WebMail is a
new service, and has been available as a public pilot since December 2001.
IS will provide support for WebMail by
- answering WebMail user queries in the Computing Help Desk Call Center
- integrating WebMail training into email-related quickstarts
- providing online documentation, including FAQs and usage recommendations
You may access WebMail from http://web.mit.edu/webmail/
WebMail Requirements _______________________________
Before you can use MIT WebMail, you must have the following:
* A web browser that supports SSL encryption and have JavaScript enabled
* Your MIT Kerberos username and password
* An email account on a central, MIT post office server (e.g. jdoe@mit.edu, not
jdoe@ai.mit.edu)
* An MIT CA certificate installed in the browser you are using
NOTE: WebMail does not require MIT Personal Certificates

Best Ways to Use WebMail ____________________________
The WebMail Team encourages people to try WebMail as a supplemental email client
in addition to other supported clients, such as Eudora and Netscape Messenger.

Known Issues ______________________________________
The team has noted some issues during the public pilot which are not yet
resolved, including the two below. A more complete list with potential
solutions is available from
http://web.mit.edu/webmail/help/faq.html
* Session Timeout: The WebMail server manages user sessions by monitoring your
activity with the WebMail server. As such, sessions automatically time out
after a period of inactivity, such as when you stay on one screen for a long
time. To prevent your session from expiring, keep your main WebMail window set
to display your INBOX. As long as you have a network connection, the INBOX
display will automatically refresh every few minutes, which has the effect of
keeping your session active.
* Window Resizing: In some browsers, if you resize the Compose window after you
have entered some text, your text will be lost. It is best to either resize the
window before you start entering your message, or verify that resizing will not
result in the loss of your message.
