Greetings,

Hopefully, by now, you are aware that MinK-10-18-99 will not be supported
after June 30, 2002. If you were not aware of support being discontinued
for MinK-10-18-99, you may wish to review the document "Hardware/Software
Support to be Discontinued on June 30th, 2002" announced in November 2001
http://web.mit.edu/swrt/announcements/hardware.html.

What is MinK-10-18-99?
MinK-10-18-99, is an earlier and (then) differently named version of MIT's
Kerberos for Windows package. It is also known as Kerberos for Windows 2.0
and was release on October 18, 1999.

How do I know if I have Mink 10-18-1999 installed?
If you have this version of Kerberos for Windows (KfW) installed, then it
will be listed in the Add/Remove Programs control panel as "Kerberos
version 4 and 5 libraries and support binaries". If you have a newer
version of KfW it will show up in Add/Remove Programs as "MIT Kerberos for
Windows 2.1" or "MIT Kerberos for Windows 2.1.1." You should check
now. If you and those you support have KfW 2.1 or 2.1.1 then you are all
set and you can skip the rest of this message. If you or those you support
have Mink-10-18-99, then you should read the rest of this message as it is
very important to you.

Of all the software products being discontinued this fiscal year,
MinK-10-18-99 may be the most significant. When MinK-10-18-99 was
released, some crucial software developments were underway at MIT and in
the Windows world. At the time, Windows versions Windows 95 and Windows NT
4.0, both 32-bit operating systems, were the primary operating systems for
IBM-compatible PCs. Concurrently, by then legacy, Windows 3.1 based
systems, running the primarily 16-bit operating system, were prevalent in
circles, and so, many applications were in a phase of transition from
16-bit to 32-bit. Historically, installers for network applications
distribute by MIT had put files in c:\net\mit\ and we began endorsing
"Program Files" with MinK-10-18-99.

The MinK-10-18-99 installer was written to accommodate the directory
structure transition, changes to environment variables, and the integration
of Kerberos 4 and Kerberos 5 components into a single installer. It was
the first version to integrate both Kerberos 4 and 5 components into a
single, 32-bit application, Leash32, with a unified user interface.

Why is support for MinK-10-18-99 being discontinued?
As you can see from the version stamp, this version of Kerberos is more
than two years old. By eliminating it from the supported products list, it
will simplify future software releases because our installer development
process will not need to anticipate and accommodate as wide a variation in
pre-installed versions of Kerberos for Windows. KfW 2.1, the replacement
for MinK-10-18-99, has been available since Jan 2001 and a patch version,
KfW 2.1.1, was released in December. Another reason for desupport is that
several current products do not work with MINK-10-18-99, e.g. KLP and
FileZilla (due out in April).

Who needs to upgrade?
Everyone who has MinK-10-18-99 installed on their system(s) should upgrade
before June 30, 2002.

If you have or those you provide support for have MinK-10-18-99 installed,
prior to upgrading to the latest Kerberos for Windows software, please
complete the following steps:

1. Download and run the utility mfp.exe to assist with the uninstall of
MinK-10-18-99 available from:
         https://web.mit.edu/swrt/kfw/cleanup-mink/mfp.exe.
The mfp utility will prompt you when it is complete.
2. Open the Add/Remove Programs control panel, select "Kerberos version 4
and 5 libraries and support binaries" and click Remove.
3. Once the uninstall process has completed, restart your machine.
4. After restarting, locate and delete the following folders and their
content, if they exist:
         C:\Program Files\Kerberos
         C:\net\mit.
5. Run the utility mfp.exe again.
6. Download and install the latest version of Kerberos for Windows from
http://web.mit.edu/software/win.html

Note: You will need valid personal certificates from MIT in order to access
the downloads indicated. You can obtain personal certificates and
assistance in using them from
http://web.mit.edu/is/help/cert/

If you have any concerns regarding the instructions above or Kerberos for
Windows (and MinK) prior to starting, please contact the Software Release
Team at swrt@mit.edu. If you need assistance or encounter problems during
the installation process, please contact the Computing Help Desk at
computing-help@mit.edu or x3-1102.

Thanks,
Jonathan
