----------------------------------------------------------

1. Microsoft Security Updates for April 2013

----------------------------------------------------------

Today, April 9th, Microsoft is planning to release nine new security bullet=
ins<http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/security/bulletin/ms13-apr>, two are=
 rated critical and seven are rated important. Restarts may be required for=
 these patches and they will affect the following software:

  *   Internet Explorer
  *   Microsoft Windows
  *   Microsoft SharePoint Server
  *   Microsoft Office
  * Windows Defender for Windows 8 and RT

The updates<http://www.update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate> will be availabl=
e from the Windows Update tool, the Windows Server Update Services or the D=
ownload Center. Microsoft will also release an updated version of the Micro=
soft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool. MIT WAUS subscribers will rec=
eive the updates as soon as they have been tested and released.

----------------------------------------------------

2. MIT Campus Network Strengthening

----------------------------------------------------

Last week a letter was distributed to Academic Council by Israel Ruiz, MIT'=
s Executive Vice President and Treasurer, regarding a plan to strengthen ca=
mpus security, including cyber security. The memo posted here<http://web.mi=
t.edu/itgc/letters/security-memo.html> provides additional details about th=
e upcoming changes that were described in the letter.

In response to preliminary questions, Information Services & Technology has=
 added an article<http://kb.mit.edu/confluence/x/u7YBCQ> to kb.mit.edu abou=
t specific details. This article is subject to change and will be updated a=
s more is known. If you have any questions about the memo, please send them=
 to cybersecurity-questions@mit.edu<mailto:cybersecurity-questions@mit.edu>=
.

Please note that the changes to the network mentioned in the memo and the a=
rticle are still in the early planning stages and have not yet been schedul=
ed. All attempts will be made to ensure there is minimal impact on the MIT =
community when these changes are implemented.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

3. Ouch! Newsletter on Protecting Your Kids Online

--------------------------------------------------------------------

The April edition of Ouch! covers protecting your kids online. The newslett=
er explains the top three risks to children online today and the steps you =
can take to defend against them.

You can download the free newsletter here<http://www.securingthehuman.org/n=
ewsletters/ouch/issues/OUCH-201304_en.pdf> (pdf).

-------------------------------------------------

4. Event: Security BSides on May 18

-------------------------------------------------

This is a community-driven event aimed at and created by information securi=
ty professionals. The goal of BSides is to expand the security conversation=
 and to engage the community. Over 200 students, technologists and informat=
ion security professionals will participate at BSides Boston this spring.
