1. National CyberCenters Program
----------------------------------------------
The National CyberCenters Program is an entry-level competition focussing o=
n the fundamentals of cyber security and covers Networking, Operating Syste=
ms and Systems Administration, three areas that are the essential foundatio=
ns of effective cybersecurity careers.
October 22 is the deadline for veterans and high school students to registe=
r for the Cyber Foundations/CyberCenters program, that includes on-line tut=
orials and challenges. Those who show talent will earn opportunities for ac=
ceptance in the new CyberCenters program where they will get intensive hand=
s-on training and internships in the only fast-track to high-paying careers=
in cybersecurity. Fees are very low ($25) but may still be waived.
If you know any veterans and high school students who have IT talent, tell =
them to register at https://www.cybercenters.org/.

2. Threat of Cyberattack on the U.S.
------------------------------------------------
Are we facing a "cyber-Pearl Harbor?" Last week Defense Secretary Leon E. P=
anetta warned that the United States is increasingly vulnerable to foreign =
computer hackers who could dismantle the nation's power grid, transportatio=
n systems, financial networks and government.
He was apparently responding to a recent wave of cyber attacks on large Ame=
rican financial institutions. He cited an attack in August on the state oil=
company Saudi Aramaco, which infected and made useless more than 30,000 co=
mputers. He is also pushing for legislation on Capitol Hill, requiring new =
standards at infrastructure facilities, where a computer breach could cause=
significant casualties or economic damage.
