Security-fyi-

We've always kept this mailing list as low-traffic as possible, and
limited it to information about security threats to the Institute.
I'm going to bend the rules just a bit, and share some news of a more
personal sort. I am leaving MIT and my position with the security
team.

-

When I first came to MIT, just over ten years ago, it was with
considerable hope and excitement for the future. In my time here, I
have learned a great deal about technology, society, my fellow man,
and myself. It has been a fascinating time, and a rewarding journey.
I am genuinely grateful for the experience.

Now it is time for me to move to a new stage in my career and life,
and I have decided to leave MIT and see what new adventures might be
ahead. I will transition my remaining responsibilities to other IS&T
staff, and will of course remain available for any sort of questions
relating to my own or the team's work.

Just before the Internet became a big deal and a household word, I
raised my hand in a meeting and said, "I'd be glad to watch the
"network-security" mailing list. It's kinda cool..." I'd been on
the list since January of 1995, and at this stage in the game, a mail
message to the list was a fairly rare event- maybe once a semester.
And it usually came from a system administrator who was sufficiently
skilled and experienced to have a very good idea of what had
occurred. In this rosy and innocent age, system intrusions were
exciting, or at least unusual, and several of us would truck over to
the person's office and gaze in fascination at the mystery before us.

Things didn't change all at once, of course. It actually took
several minutes...

Soon, we needed a team. We sent a call out in 1997 for volunteers
from the community to assist in what was becoming a major work
effort. What successes we have had are due almost entirely to the
selfless volunteers and student staff who answered that call, and
others who followed over the years. Computer security has been an
unwelcome intrusion at times for all of us, but the often invisible
work of this largely volunteer team has served to support and protect
the work of the Institute, through hard work and long hours, with
considerable success. My sincerest thanks go to them for years of
hard effort, given freely.

I've enjoyed my time here more than I can say, and I wish all of you
only the best.

(Patch your machines, Kids! :-)

-Bob
