There has been some attention paid in the media to a "hacking
challenge", which is offering a prize to the hacker that defaces the
most web sites on July 6th.

The security team would like to remind everyone involved in
maintaining web servers to check that their systems have all
necessary system updates installed, and that good, strong passwords
are in place.

Web page defacements, while relatively mild security events, can be
somewhat embarrassing and certainly waste a good bit of time in
system recovery. A few minutes of prevention may be well spent.
