It looks like there's some stuff in the newest version of mtools to
set up Zip disks which could be relevant if someone has an unformatted
zip disk and wants to format it on a Solaris machine.

I would like to announce a new release of mtools, a collection of
utilities to access MS-DOS disks from Unix without mounting them.

Mtools supports Win'95 style long file names, FAT32, OS/2 Xdf disks
and 2m disks (store up to 1992k on a high density 3 1/2 disk). Mtools
also includes mpartition, a simple partitioning programing to setup
Zip and Jaz media on non-PC machines (SunOs, Solaris and HP/UX).

Mtools can currently be found at the following places:

http://linux.wauug.org/pub/knaff/mtools
http://www.club.innet.lu/~year3160/mtools
ftp://prep.ai.mit.edu/pub/gnu

 and soon at:

ftp://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/Incoming/mtools-3.6.tar.gz
 (will be moved to ftp://pub/Linux/utils/disk-management/mtools-3.6.tar.gz)
ftp://tsx-11.mit.edu/pub/linux/sources/usr.bin/mtools-3.6.tar.gz

There is an mtools mailing list at mtools@linux.wauug.org. To
subscribe to it, send a message containing 'subscribe mtools' in its
body to majordomo@linux.wauug.org. Mailing list archives are at
http://linux.wauug.org/hypermail/mtools

Before submitting a bug report, check whether your problem has not
yet been fixed in one of the Alpha patches at:

http://www.club.innet.lu/~year3160/mtools or
http://linux.wauug.org/pub/knaff/mtools

Mtools-3.6 includes the following new features:

  * Mzip -e now only ejects Zip disks when they are not mounted.
  * Mzip now has a manpage
  * Mzip now detects bad passwords and prints an error message
  * Better interoperability with dosemu
  * Various portability fixes for AIX, A/UX, HP/UX, BEOS and SunOS4

The following features of mtools 3.6 already existed in mtools
starting from 2.5.4, but not in mtools 2.0.7 (distributed with
Slackware and other Linux distributions):

	1) Support for variable sector sizes.
	2) Support for Ciriaco Garcia's "2m" formats.
	3) Support for formatting disks with 16-bit fats (hard disk
	partitions for instance)
	4) Support for formatting ED disks (Their capacity is too big to
use a 12 bit FAT and 1 sector clusters. It either uses bigger
clusters or a 16 bit FAT)
	5) Automatically configures the correct disk geometry.
	6) New mmount command. Reads the boot sector, sets the geometry
	and finally mounts the disk.
	7) It is now possible to copy files to/from stdout/stdin:
mcopy a:test - and mcopy - a:test. This is useful for piping
	and for scripts.
	8) Mtools now tries several sources to get its drive geometry
configuration from: first ~/.mtoolsrc, then /etc/mtools.conf, and
	finally compiled-in.
	9) Fat checking code is now optional. This allows to read old
Atari disks and other weird formats.
	10) Support for DOS and Atari serial numbers.

[ Most GNU software is packed using the GNU `gzip' compression program.
Source code is available on most sites distributing GNU software.

For information on how to order GNU software on tape or cd-rom, and
printed GNU manuals, check the file etc/ORDERS in the GNU Emacs
distribution, ftp the file /pub/gnu/GNUinfo/ORDERS on prep, or
  e-mail a request to: gnu@prep.ai.mit.edu

By ordering your GNU software from the FSF, you help us continue to
develop more free software. Media revenues are our primary source of

The above software will soon be at these ftp sites as well.
Please try them before prep.ai.mit.edu as prep is very busy!
