Good morning,
The Athena Release Team has decided not to release a new version of Debathena this summer. The primary motivation for this decision is Ubuntu's changing release lifecycle and support statement. Ubuntu 13.04 ("Raring"), which we would normally target for release, will only receive security and bugfix updates through January 2014. This would leave any potential cluster workstations without security updates between January and June (which is the earliest date we could release a new version). This is not acceptable, but unfortunately neither is deploying a completely new version of Athena during IAP.
Going forward, we anticipate deploying Ubuntu "LTS" (long-term support) releases to the clusters. The current version (Ubuntu 12.04) is an LTS, and the next LTS release version (14.04) should be deployed to the Athena clusters in Summer 2014. We currently provide support for Ubuntu 13.04 on private workstations, but community members are encouraged to stick with Ubuntu 12.04 unless they have a specific need for features available in 13.04.
We also hope that not releasing a new version this summer will allow the Release Team to focus on code cleanup, fixing outstanding bugs, and releasing new features, such as the Nautilus / AFS Permission integration we released last month, which finally permits changing AFS permissions without using the Terminal window or command line.
If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact the Athena Release Team at release-team@mit.edu.
