The interesting information (which we don't have and can't get) is why they're submitted via the web interface. Are they submitted because adding local printers is hard, or because printing your Word document to a PDF and then uploading it to quickprint.mit.edu is easier? (I have a hard time believing it's the latter.)

The degraded performance would be being at the whim of the PostScript conversion on the CUPS servers, which is less than ideal, although better than it was.

That's probably fine.
As I noted in my original mail, I would still prefer it if http://quickprint.mit.edu/faq/ipp said "Hey, if you're only looking to print to cluster or dorm printers, visit http://mit.edu/printing/pharos instead, since it'll be much easier" at the top of the page. Is that an option?
