Hi,

There's an issue going on with some commercial software needed for
teaching in course 6.

Michael McIlrath in MTL has been trying to get Cadence running on Athena
for course use. He apparently didn't get started on this until after the
64 bit debathena release came out, and he's been running into problems
with it. It's getting to be an urgent issue because it's needed for
course work. I don't know if they ever had it working on 32 bit
debathena.

Vendor tech support is unhelpful as they say they don't support Ubuntu.
This is actually a larger issue that should also be addressed at
release-team. I've run into it too in other applications and it can get
really frustrating...

Michael had previously expressed frustration at IS&T moving to Ubuntu
and feels IS&T hasn't provided support in getting a number of
"Redhat-only" commercial applications working on Ubuntu. One other I
know of is Maxwell by Ansoft- I had been working with Myron Freeman on
that- the vendor initially said they would make it work on Ubuntu but
then did nothing and the only recourse was to stop using it.

As far as Cadence goes, Michaels's first request was for the ksh shell
which the application needs. geofft offered to assist with this; I
believe we've identified a suitable ksh package (of the several
available). Michael further says he needs backing store enabled for the
X server and has asked for instructions for enabling it. Andrew has
offered to assist with that and will get in touch with Myron Freeman who
is working with Michael; there are test machines available in the
department that Myron maintains.

There may well be other things that come up later- I hope we can get
this working for them.

                                          Alex
