There were a couple questions that came in on status items, and some
errors in the Machine count and Login count sections. This replaces the
previous status report published on 9 March 2005.

Team Name: Athena UNIX Platform Team
Report Date: 9 March 2005

Accomplishments past period:

ONGOING: Testing and bug fixing of Athena 9.3.

Last Month's goals:

ONGOING: Testing and bug fixing of current Athena release.

ON-HOLD: Develop Disconnected Athena documentation. (On hold until AFS
bug resolved and Disconnected Operation work resumes forward progress.)
ON-HOLD: Produce mkserv SAMBA so that Athena systems can be SAMBA
servers. (Low priority)
DONE: Outreach to browser-release proposing integrating FireFox for
next Athena release.
DELAYED: For Athena disconnected operation, craft fixes for issues
raised in testing and retest.
PROGRESS: Deploy new Athena installer with better SCSI support.
ON-HOLD: Implement strategy for migrating Athena bug reports from
discuss to GForge.
DELAYED: Integrate OpenAFS 1.3.7? for Linux 2.6 and Solaris 10 support.
(We will check in with zacheiss and either he or rbasch will do it.)
DELAYED: Integrate upcoming Kerberos 1.4 release into summer's Athena
full release. (Awaiting the 1.4 release)
DELAYED: Integrate new version of OpenSSH summer's Athena full release.
(Not difficult, just a matter of making sure who is doing the work.)
PROGRESS: Investigate RPM issue that is resulting in deleted system
files as a result of interrupted updates. (Red Hat is being a bit thick
about working this.)
PROGRESS: Begin integrating Solaris 10 for summer's Athena full release.

Community Milestones Met:

Other Accomplishments:

* Responded to security compromises.
* Began testing of Athena 9.4.0 in preparation for Alpha release.
* Confirmed deliverables for Summer release and set tentative strategy
moving forward.
* Produced package lists for integrating RHEL 4 into Athena release and
began testing.
* Started collecting weekly and monthly statistics for number of logins
to Athena machines.
* Determined there was probably no need for a March patch release that
was originally listed in the February planned Community Milestones.

Next month's goals:

ONGOING: Testing and bug fixing of current Athena release.

ON-HOLD: Develop Disconnected Athena documentation.
ON-HOLD: Produce mkserv SAMBA so that Athena systems can be SAMBA
servers.

NEW: Discuss project plans for long term Athena work.
NEW: Deploy Athena 9.4 Alpha release.

Next Community Milestone(s):

Bugfix patch release when next needed.

Issues:

OpenAFS and the Linux community are not doing as good a job of working
together as we would like. Getting a working AFS as we adopt RHEL 4
with the 2.6 kernel will be a bit of extra work.

We have received a request through Alex Prengel to integrate Java3d
into the Athena release. This work is non-trivial. We are awaiting a
management decision as to whether or not to proceed with it. Some time
has gone by without a response. We will ask again.

A timeout problem with AFS in disconnected operation (If you start AFS
when you're off-net you hang for a long time.) was thought to be fixed
but is not. We consider this a show-stopper for graceful disconnected
operation, and have put other disconnected operation work on hold until
this issue is resolved.

Key learnings:

Additional comments:

Many items that were marked "DELAYED" this month were assigned to Garry
Zacheiss who was off doing other stuff. We're taking action to get the
items resolved.

Athena Monthly machine counts:

Method: On install, machines get a unique ID. Each day every system
reports its existence to a central syslog. This method over-counts
systems installed multiple times. Systems running Athena than 9.0 or
earlier are not counted.

SYSTYPE 09/2004 10/2004 11/2004 12/2004 01/2005 02/2005 Delta
LINUX 790 736 753 737 746 770 +24
SUN 674 659 647 632 645 621 -24

Monthly Athena Login counts:

Method: By reviewing of the logs of the service that makes
personalized notifications to users at login time, we are able to count
the number of unique Athena logins. Here we display the total number of
logins over a four week period, the number of logins by unique user ID
and the median number of logins per unique user ID.

Date: 2/05
Total: 353970
Unique: 10847
Median: 12
