Good Afternoon,

NOTE: This message only applies if you are running the following versions of Ubuntu: 8.04 ("Hardy"), 10.04 ("Lucid"), or 11.10 ("Oneiric"). If you're unsure what version you're running, see <http://kb.mit.edu/confluence/x/PwCtAQ>

On May 9, Ubuntu ended support for 8.04 ("Hardy Heron"). The full announcement can be found at: <https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-announce/2013-May/000173.html>. Debathena ended support for Hardy in June 2011, and all Debathena bugfixes stopped in October 2012. As of yesterday, Ubuntu 8.04 will no longer receive any security or bug fixes from Ubuntu. As Ubuntu 8.04 is now 5 years old, IS&T recommends a clean installation of Ubuntu 12.04 instead of two consecutive upgrades. As always, we recommend that you have a full backup of your data before performing any operating system upgrade or installation.

On May 9, Ubuntu ended support for 11.10 ("Oneiric Ocelot"). The full announcement can be found at: <https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-announce/2013-May/000174.html>. Ubuntu 11.10 was an "off-cycle" release for Debathena, and was never fully supported, nor was it deployed to any IS&T-maintained workstations. Anyone using Ubuntu 11.10 should upgrade to Ubuntu 12.04, following the instructions at <https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PreciseUpgrades>. As always, we recommend that you have a full backup of your data before performing any operating system upgrade or installation.

Finally, on May 9, Ubuntu also ended support for the "desktop" portion of 10.04 ("Lucid Lynx"). The full announcement can be found at: <https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-announce/2013-May/000172.html>. The line between "desktop" and "server" is somewhat blurry -- many command-line utilities are considered part of the "server" suite even though they are also used on desktop machines. Ubuntu will continue to provide high-priority security updates and bug fixes for the "server" component of 10.04 through April 2015. Debathena will continue to support Lucid in a "server" configuration through at least January 2014; determination about further support will be made at that time. Anyone using Ubuntu 10.04 is encouraged to upgrade to Ubuntu 12.04 as soon as possible, following the instructions at <https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PreciseUpgrades>. As always, we recommend that you have a full backup of your data before performing any operating system upgrade or installa!
 tion.
