Greetings teammates,
In trying to research the SNMP capabilities of the new HP 4050 printer, I
stumbled across a very interesting factoid. There is now something called
by one vendor the blue kit for hp. This DIMM, when installed in an hp
printer transforms the hp pcl/postscript printer into a "fully" functional
IPDS printer.
The hp site information available is very slight, including that the
specifications for the 8100 printers is that this is not an option. One of
the vendors, MPI, claims that they have a kit that will do this
transformation for the hp5si, 4050 and 8100 family of printers.
There is no indication of cost per kit in the pages I have found and or
looked at yet, but if it truly can make the hp8100 look and interact with
the ipm server like any ibm ipds printer, some of our accounting and
control issues look a lot better.
There is one line in the paragraph describing this kit that reads: Your HP
laserjet printer is thus recognised by the ibm system as a true ipds printer.
If this is true then we would be able to do a "normal" printer setup
through the java gui, the operators would be able to start and stop the
file printing, and would be able to "forward space" into stopped print
files to restart them and reduce/eliminate reprinting of pages already
printed because of printer jams/out of paper/network problems.
Is this worth pursuing under the delivery project?
Is this something that should be placed in the production parking lot to be
pursued after we are in the steady state?
Is this something we do not want to pursue?
