Norm,
Thanks much for the diagram. It does indeed reflect what we discussed
to the best of my recollection. I'm not sure we discussed the fact
that (some?) Xerox printers can handle multiple types of internal
print data streams. I met with Xerox this past Thursday and they
did mention that fact. So, I was glad to see that in the diagram
as well as the reference to MICR capabilities in Xerox's DP96 printer.
I was also glad to see that you showed the two potential methods for
connecting the IBM 3160 Model 2 - both mainframe channel attach as well
as network attached.
One item that did come to mind after we met was the possibility of
resolution problems if we use "transformations" from Postscript to
IPDS. Gill Emmons and others are used to 600 DPI Postscript now
on the HP 8100 printers. We may have resolution problems trying
to move that to 240 DPI AFP printers like the IBM 3827. I seem
to recall that the 240 DPI restriction was removed from AFP some time
ago - but I may be dreaming. If there are resolution issues, we may
want to skip the transformations and simply beef-up our printers
on the Postscript side of things sooner than later. The model you
presented is very attractive since it supports multiple printer types
and both network and channel attached printers.
We'll look forward to seeing the draft of your final report next month.
In the mean time, stay warm! :)
Dave (for the team)
