Project Name: Enterprise Printing Delivery Project
Team Members: Kip Bruggeman, Mary Ellen Bushnell, Rocklyn Clarke
Dave Lambert, Cecilia Talamantes & Mike Whitson
Report Date: 01/23/1999
Project Notebook: http://web.mit.edu/is/delivery/enterprint/
Accomplishments for the past period:
- reached a general understanding regarding scope; we'll stick
with the original charter's scope and concentrate on "hardcore
printing" vs a general document management solution; also, the
focus will be on data center printing - other print services
such as APS may migrate to the new service if appropriate and
so desired by the appropriate standing teams
- recruited Rocklyn Clarke as the replacement team member for Dave
Lawless, and brought Rocklyn up-to-date on past work
- held three follow-up interviews with CAO and Libraries with
Moore consultants present; checked in with Morgan & Connelly too;
note: Morgan declined to approve the MICR printing for AP checks
proposed by Arsenault & LeVie - this should allow a separate
project team to address MICR check printing from a broader
perspective
- held team meeting with the Moore consultants; Moore presented
an interesting model which would allow a single print server
to manage print mainframe print queues as well as print received
from other servers; the server would also manage mainframe
and network attached printers; additionally, this model supports
the "transformation" of internal print data streams - converting
Postscript to IPDS (AFP) if so desired for example; IBM's Infoprint
Manager and Barr Systems provide this functionality
- held a consulting conference call with GartnerGroup; it appears
that solutions for secure network based printing are far and
few between; Mike did find one company which has an offering
to help address secure printing (i-data)
- drafted a list of cost elements associated with centralized printing
to be used for the business modeling efforts
- reviewed the Pismere business modeling work
Goals for the coming period:
- work with Moore, Gartner, Xerox and IBM to identify other potential
architectural models
- research and document existing Data Center printing costs
- work with ITIT to "ratify" our guiding principles re secure
printing (carry over)
- draft a WBS and timeline
- merge the Copy Tech, APS & Data Center requirements lists as appropriate
Issues:
Solutions for secure network based printing are minimal at best. ITIT
has been slow to respond to our requests for guidance in this area.
Key learnings:
We'll be working on a WBS and timeline now that the scope issues
have been resolved. It's kinda hard to produce a roadmap and ETA
if you don't know your destination. :)
Team dynamics:
We'll miss Dave Lawless but are very pleased that Rocklyn has joined
the effort. We miss Mike as he vacations in Japan, and look forward to
his return on the 31st. We lost some time due to the holidays and the
Flu From Hell. However, the team has refocused and is pumped up now
that scope issues are resolved and we have a clearer vision of at least
one potential model.
Additional comments:
At some point, we'll need to consider spinning off a separate effort
to help make MICR check printing a reality.
