Hello Theresa,
As I mentioned in our phone conversation earlier today, the
explanation I offered in my previous email was only partially
correct. Here is what I believe actually happened:
1. You were notified that the "rec" queue had been set up in Moira.
2. Sometime on 2/25/2002 you attempted to print to "rec" from Athena.
3. Your print attempt failed because pillage had no printcap entry for "rec".
This is because we have not yet automated the process of updating the
pillage and plunder printcaps from Moira. We hope to have this in place
within the next two weeks.
4. On 3/05/2002 you attempted to print to "rec" from Athena.
5. This print attempt resulted in the automated email report that
you forwarded
in your email below. The reason this happened was because by now the "rec"
printcap entry was in place on pillage and your print request was
processed.
Because your user information (i.e. cost object, building, room number) was
not complete however, pillage generated the warning email. Your file did
actually print however, although the warning email could certainly be
construed to indicate otherwise. Your print file is actually sitting on my
desk.
6. Because I did not notify you that the file had printed, you quite
reasonably
concluded that this print request had also failed.
As we agreed, I will do the following:
A - I will draw a diagram of the current and future queue creation process and
distribute it for comments.
B - I will also make sure that we reserve our queue names as "pseudo" hosts to
prevent anyone else from creating host names on MITNET that conflict with
our queue names.
C - I will review the action that will be taken when an unauthorized person
attempts to print to a restricted queue. Since this can easily happen as
a result of administrative delays in authorizing a new employee, I will
attempt to ensure that such print files can be easily retrieved and
printed once authorization issues are resolved.
