Rocklyn,
The reason the printers name was chosen as E191.MIT.EDU was due to the
fact that it will also be used by SAP. As far as we know an SAP printer
can only have a four character node name. We will hold off changing
anything for the time being until we hear different from you.

Hello John and Bill,
This is a followup on the network configuration of the IBM 3160 in E19-630.
I apologize for the delay in getting this out. Last Thursday May 4, I dropped
by E19-630 to look at the 3160 network configuration. Working with John, I
made the following changes:
IP Address: 18.142.3.249
Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0 (previous value was 255.255.255.0)
Default Gateway Address: 18.142.0.1 (previous value was IBM default)
This configuration worked. The assigned IP address of 18.142.3.249 had to be
coupled with correct settings for the Subnet Mask and Gateway Address. The
(incorrect) subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 was appropriate for the IBM network
where the printer last lived (as was the gateway address), but was the wrong
one for our network.
In order for the printer to be able to communicate with the rest of the MIT
network it has to know how to interpret our IP addresses (including its own)
correctly. The subnet mask does this. The 255.255.0.0 tells the printer
(and everything else on MITnet) that our network is divided into subnetworks
of the form 18.xxx (e.g. every machine with an IP address beginning with
18.142 is on the same subnet). The default gateway address of 18.142.0.1
tells the printer (and everything else on the 18.142 subnet) where the router
for that subnet lives. The router (not to be confused with the ROUTER virtual
machine on MITVMA and MITVMC) directs data packets (the stuff that carries
data on the internet) between different subnets. If you don't know where
your router is you can't talk to anyone on a different subnet (e.g. the 18.92
and 18.94 subnets in W91) or on a different network (e.g. 198.xxx.yyy.zzz
where the White House web server lives).
In general, I don't think we in IS do a good job of posting this information
in locations where it is likely to be needed. It is available on the web
however. I went to:
IS main page, clicked on
"Services", and then on
"Network connections and remote access" and then clicked on
"Getting a network connection (on or off-campus)" s
You can find the appropriate subnet and gateway settings under second bullet
(either connecting a Macintosh or connecting a Windows machine). I mention
this for future reference. Obviously the 3160 is not a desktop machine, but
the subnet and gateway settings are the same (you should also note the name
server addresses as these are important for most other installations). There
may be a more helpful and more easily accessed web page somewhere out there,
but I haven't come across it yet. You might want to submit a comment on this
to the IS Home Page team. They are pretty responsive.
One last thing. I suggest that we move quickly to get the host name of the
printer changed from the current value of "E191.MIT.EDU". I suggest that it
be changed to "E19-630-AFP3160.MIT.EDU". Can one of you take care of this,
or should I do it?
Rocklyn
