Hello,
As some of you may know, the Enterprise Print Delivery Team is currently
testing InfoPrint Manager (IPM) and IBM print server product. We are
strongly considering IPM as the product to use for managing MIT's enterprise
printing services. We are currently testing this product using an RS/6000
running AIX and an IBM NP12 laser printer located in W91-230. Both of these
are on loan from IBM. We have been doing some tests using the HP Laserjet 5Si
located in the save room and will also be testing against the IBM 3160 heavy
duty producton printer in E19 later this week.
In the course of our testing, I have taken the following actions which have
some implications for many of you who will be reading this email:
1. I have turned BOOTP off for the HP Laserjet 5Si in W91-230. This was
done to allow the IPM server to send print jobs to it. This also has
the side effect of exposing the printer to control from other outside
servers.
2. The AIX server is not kerberized and is being accessed from outside
MIT by some IBM personnel. Passwords to the server are going over the
net in clear text.
We expect to have the server here for another 1 - 2 weeks. Since it is a
loaner from our IBM printer rep, we don't have the freedom to completely
reconfigure it for greater security. Mike Whitson tried to do this before he
left, but he was handicapped by the fact that the server lacked a C compiler.
Network Services:
I'm sure you folks will have some concerns and I will do my best to address
them. I can supply you with the relevant IP addresses and host names via a
more direct route at your request.
