Follow up comments from the IBM folks in Boulder. Please note their
willingness (for pay) to integrate our Kerberos environment into
IPM.

Subject: Re: MIT Infoprint Manager Discussion - clarifications (Document

Phil and Jeff,
A few thoughts came up after our discussion with MIT, which I'd like to add
to clarify some points. Please pass these along to the MIT attendees:
The question of how to drive network printers, whether using IPM
transforms or the native capability of the printer.
Most of our distributed printing customers have opted to do both. They
define a single logical destination for a printer, and depending on the
attributes of the job coming in, it is delivered to one of two actual
destinations that define the same physical printer. For example, an HP
Laserjet that supports PCL and Postscript L2 has two actual destinations
created - one using the PSF device support subsystem (DSS), the other
using AIX device support. The actual destination that's used for a
particular job depends on the attributes of the job. For example, if
IPM detects the job is AFP, EBCDIC line data, PDF, GIF, TIFF, JPEG,
Ditroff (etc.) which the printer does not natively support, IPM selects
the PSF DSS to take advantage of the transforms. If the job is ASCII,
PCL or Postscript, IPM uses the AIX DSS. Of course, other job
attributes may be used to select the appropriate DSS such as job size.
We are looking at ways to eliminate the need to define two actual
destinations for the same printer, which some customers find unwieldy
(they often use scripts to define new printers), but we don't have a
delivery schedule for that yet.
Impact printing
IPM does not support 4245s or any other channel-attach impact printer.
However it does support ASCII network impact printers such as our 6400
product line, and also supports the IPDS version of the 6400 for
additional font, barcode and graphics (AFP) capability.
Security implementation
We are open to working with MIT to integrate the DCE or non-DCE version
of Infoprint Manager with MIT's Kerberos implementation to assure
authorization and authentication work properly for server and clients.
This will require some fee services from IBM.
