Friends,
This morning I was deeply moved to find an e-mail note from
Professor Konishi Satoru, a Hiroshima Hibakusha and leading figure in the
Japanese peace movement. He asks that his thoughts and concern be with us as
we gather for our vigil at Copley Square here in Boston tonight.
Also waiting for me was the following Message to the Peace Movements
in the USA from the Japan Council Against A & H Bombs, which I thought
should be shared with you.
This morning I found myself working through a number of thoughts,
including that nothing is fore ordained. Even as we reel with shock, and in
some cases very real suffering as Guerica, the 20th century, and post-modern
warfare become elements of our collective experience in the U.S., the
central question is how we will respond. As the terrible cointinuing
Israeli-Palestinian crisis should demonstrate for us all, an eye for an eye
leaves us all blind, and on a literal dead end path. War is not the answer.
There is a reason the World Court was established and that the International
Criminal Court is being established.
For Peace and Justice,
Joseph Geson

Message to the Peace Movements in the USA
September 12, 2001
Dear friends,
We are shocked and deeply saddened by the simultaneous terrorist attacks
conducted on September 11, 2001. Through you we express our heartfelt
sympathy to the families and friends of the victims who lost their lives, as
well as to the injured.
We strongly denounce the terrorism, the indiscriminate violence and the
killings, which nothing can justify for any reason whatsoever.
The peace movements in the USA are calling for a thorough investigation and
resolution of the problem based on law and reason, as opposed to a hasty,
revengeful military action. We support your approach, and will work
together with you to build-up public opinion that stands against terrorism,
the use of military force and against nuclear weapons.
Yours sincerely,
Hiroshi Taka
Secretary General
Japan Council against A & H Bombs (Japan Gensuikyo)
