Action yesterday a success! with more to come...
25 SLAP students and several custodians from Harvard pulled off a
great action showing our solidarity with janitors working in buildings
owned by Boston Properties who are on strike in Baltimore. Our target was
a Boston Properties building in Cambridge. We were met by police at the
door. So, half of our group stayed outside in a highly visible picket line
leafleting all the tenants of the building as they left work. The other
half of the group snuck inside through a garage entrance. They took the
elevator to the third floor. In this building all the offices have glass
doors facing a central atrium. Our chanting echoed throughout the atrium
and everyone saw us drop our banner. We were quickly escorted out by the
police but not before everyone saw the commotion.
The janitors we were supporting in Baltimore are paid poverty
level wages with no full time work, and few benefits. They are trying to
organize, but their management under direction from Boston Properties is
fighting the union. Solidarity actions across the country are bring
attention to their struggle and pressure on Boston Properties. Yesterday
the janitors in Baltimore issued a press release describing all these
actions- and ours was at the top of the list! Also WBUR came out and
interviewed students and workers at our protest!
Come to the SLAP first summer workshop of Solidarity Summer:
-to discuss successful campaigns at Emerson: contingent faculty brought
together with student help into a union! and Harvard: student worker
solidarity around the living wage sit-in! exclusive sit-in video coverage
will be screened
-to tell other student activists about organizing on your campus
-and to plan what we want to do together to this summer!
Next Thursday, July 5th, 7:00pm, at the Community Church of Boston, 565
Boyleston St in Copley Square.
