Roscoe Giles is a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer
Engineering at Boston University. He has done research in theoretical and
computational physics with special emphasis on applications of large scale
parallel computing in these areas. His recent efforts have focused
computational science education and on participatory design of information
systems. He is a team leader for the Education, Outreach and Training
Partnership for Advanced Computational Infrastructure (EOT-PACI,
http://www.eot.org), Deputy Director of the Boston University Center for
Computational Science, and Executive Director of the Institute for African
American E-Culture (http://www.iaaec.com).
The new Institute for African American ECulture (http://www.iaaec.com)
attempts to find new ways of 'doing' information systems by involving
technologically diverse groups with a common goal in the development and
creation of IT. An important aspect of this effort is how we use cultural
metaphors to frame our interactions with IT.
Professor Giles will introduce these ideas and then help lead an audience
conversation about them and related ideas that arise.
