anarchy?

i was wondering the other day....
anarchy, as a social concept: on what scale can it exist? I was writing
a paper the other day and found myself using phrases like "a fundamental
restructuring of the social consciousness." i realized that when i
think about it, i always assume that anarchy will never work on a large
scale (like nation-sized). a fundamental restructuring of the social
system to accomodate anarchy implies, to me, a complete loss of
coordination on a large scale. is this true? i live in a co-op that
largely operates by anarchy, and it works fine for 30 people. at what
point do you think it would cease to work? 60 people? 100? 1000? the
USA? My political science TA was trying to convince me it would never
work for a nation, or even a group much larger than 30, but i disagreed.
