The WPI Chapter of Student Pugwash USA
will host of the Northeast Regional Student Pugwash Conference
from Friday, March 30, through Sunday, April 1.
Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Worcester, MA
"THE ECONOMIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL REALITIES OF MULTINATIONAL CORPORATIONS
AND RESOURCE AVAILABILITY"
Some of the topics covered at the conference include: the effect multinational
corporations have on developing nations, incentives for providing equal access
to resources, the role of technology in securing future energy sources, and
the involvement students can have in these areas.
The conference starts on Friday night, with a keynote speech by John Reed on
energy and the environment. Dr. Reed has worked for years with the Federal
government and industry executives on effective conservation, energy
deregulation and control. On Saturday, the conference will feature panel
sessions led by industry spokespeople and academic speakers, followed by
student working group sessions focused on discussing solutions to these "tough
problems". Activities are planned throughout the weekend to engage students
and faculty in areas of social concern through the development of Student
Pugwash chapters.
The WPI chapter of Student Pugwash is part of a nationwide chapter network of
students concerned about society-technology issues. The mission of Student
Pugwash USA is to promote the socially responsible application of science and
technology in the 21st century. As a student organization, Student Pugwash
USA encourages young people to examine the ethical, social, and global
implications of science and technology, and to make these concerns a guiding
focus of their academic and professional endeavors.
Pre-registration is $20 through March 16. Between March 17 and March 27,
registration is $25. Late registration, after March 27, is $30 (including
registration at the door). Registration fees cover meals on Saturday and
breakfast on Sunday, housing with WPI students, conference materials and
speaker fees.
