Africa consumes the least energy on a per capita basis but y et has over 12%
of the world fossil resources and significant quantity of renewable
resources, but developing these resources in a mostly economic constraint
environment faces major challenges. Apart from access to technology and
finances, the environmental challenges are huge. Existing fragile ecosystems
couple with their almost dependence on natural system for major economic
activities presents challenges for the continent. Solving these challenges
will require changes in the way energy is produced and consumed using more
innovative technological feature which can be based on certain existing
initiatives. However, policy concerns to achieve these changes are pivotal.
This lecture will provide inputs to the policy debate after giving a brief
introduction on energy and environmental state of the continent.
This is part of a series of talks for an environmental policy seminar that is
being sponsored by the MIT Department of Urban Studies and Planning.
