TecsChange needs Tutors for its next class

TecsChange is looking for new tutors for its Computer
Repair/Earn-a-Computer Course. The program is intended to benefit two
groups: youth and community activists. The program helps young people by
giving them valuable skills. It also provides positive role models for
them by bringing them together with community-minded activists. The
program also benefits the larger community by sharing the same knowledge
with community activists. As part of the program, the students are also
introduced to issues of technology and social change, including the
effects of technology on society, technology in the developing world.
Tutors should have a solid background using computers, want to learn
repair and are willing to learn as they go. The class stresses
diagnosing and simple repairs on IBM compatible computers in an open and
friendly atmosphere. We use informal team teaching approach, we you
will have backup from some more experienced tutors. Most of the
students are from the Roxbury and Dorchester areas of Boston.

The next round of Computer Repair/Earn-a-Computer classes is set to
begin on Monday, Jan. 8th at 6:30pm. This is our 17th Earn-a-Computer
Course (see details below) and we're very excited by the growing number
of people who have taken an interest in this class. Volunteers are the
reason that this class has become a successful way for people to develop
new skills AND make a difference!
17th Computer Repair Course, Mon. & Wed 6:30 - 9:00 p.m., Jan 8th to
Feb. 21st 2001

We need tutors who can commit to one evening per week, either Monday or
Wednesday. If you are interested in becoming a tutor, please contact me
by email. Please indicate which night you would prefer to tutor (Moon,
Wed or both). Note that there will be no class on Mondays, Jan.15th and
February 19th.
**Also note: We will have some special orientation sessions for tutors
as follows
Wednesday. Dec.13th and 7-9 PM.
Orientation on how we run the program, how we approach the tutoring
process and encourage student participation.
Introduction to our diagnostic program “checkit”, CMOS set up and the
how we check out computers.
(We will also schedule a hand on session as a follow up based on peoples
availability.)
Saturday Dec.16th from 1 to 4 PM
A repeat of the Wednesdays Material plus a more hands on session,
actually working on computers and going through the process.
We understand you might not be able to make all these sessions, try to
make it to what you can. Any questions you can email or call me

**Other volunteer opportunities**

Whether you just graduated from the earn-a-computer class, are thinking
about tutoring, or just want to learn more about computer hardware,
hands-on volunteering is the best way to sharpen your skills. The
TecsChange office is now open every Saturday afternoon from 1-4pm. We
have many projects for volunteers to work on. Stay for one hour or
three. Most projects involve working on computers that will be sent to
organizations in the developing world.

We seek donations of: PC-compatible computers (Pentium 100MHz or
better), memory, hard disks, modems, printers, monitors, and manuals for
any of the above. If you or organizations (or companies) you know of can
