about their experiences in The Food Project, a fantastic organization
teaching environmental and community values to teens in and out of the
city by involving them in sustainable agriculture. Be sure to bring
your kids -- we'll have some good FUN.

Educating Youth about Earth Stewardship and Local Agriculture:
Teaching young people about service to land and
community through sustainable agriculture
A public lecture and discussion
Sunday, November 12, 2000 - 4:00 pm sharp
Requested donation: $5 non-members, $3 members (no one turned away)
Delicious vegan dinner at 6:00, $10 additional (reservation requested at

(dinner includes soup and tea, and uses all organic ingredients where
possible)
Greg Gale, Jose Texeira and two to three young people from The Food
Project, will speak about their work bridging the city and suburbs
through sustainable agriculture. This organization brings together
inner city and suburban teens to grow 150,000 pounds of organic
vegetables each year for shelters, urban farmers' markets, and suburban
customers. Through service to the land and community youth learn
important lessons about themselves, others and stewardship of the
earth. The presenters will describe their work and offer personal
testimonials about the impact this work has had on them. They will
describe ways to get involved locally and where the organization is
headed in the future.
Greg Gale has worked at TFP since it began in 1992. He was program
director and co-director before turning full time to program
development. He graduated from Harvard Divinity School and has been a
middle and high school teacher, juvenile delinquent counselor, organic
farmer, and community activist. Jose Texeira has worked at TFP for
three summers as a crew leader and site supervisor. He recently
graduated from UMA Amherst with a degree in economics, and accepted a
full time position as Academic Year Program coordinator.
Academic Year Program Participants: Youth in this program call
themselves the DIRT crew, Dynamic, Intelligent, Responsible, Teenagers.
They work year round with TFP growing food, leading volunteers, and
representing TFP publicly. A number of these youth will join us to
speak depending on who is available.
