As many of you may be aware, incredible violence has broken out in
Jerusalem. The current situation, which has
been described by some as "the war for Jerusalem" began after Ariel
Sharon, the hawkish leader of the Likud Party, visited the Al-Aqsa Mosque
and the Haram al-Sharif (the Noble Sanctuary.) Sharon was found
responsible for the massacre of around 2,000 Palestinian refugees in Sabra
and Shatila by an Israeli inquiry, and his visit to the holy site was
condemned as an "irresponsible provocation" by French President Jacques
Chirac, among others.
While both sides bear some responsibility for this violence, the
Israeli military's use of helicopter gunships, tanks and antitank missiles
against popular demonstrations and stone-throwing children is
disproportionate, inhumane and against the universal values of civility,
respect and peace that all claim to stand for.
Children and medical personnel have been killed and wounded by Israeli
soldiers and police, in direct violation of international law and common
humanity. A French television camera man even captured the shooting and
murder of an unarmed boy while he tried to hide behind his father. The
father sustained serious injuries. Two ambulance drivers tried to save them.
One was shot dead, the other seriously injured (see references below for
stories and pictures).
In response to the brutality some organizations in the Boston
area are sponsoring a protest. Tomorrow, Tuesday the 3rd of September,
those opposed to this indiscriminate assault will gather at JFK/UMass
Boston to voice outrage, and to demand that the American people and
government do their part to assure that peace and justice reign. The
presidential debates will be held there that night, so media coverage
should be extensive.
