Friends,

Have you ever thought that technology is developed with too little thought
about its ethical consequence?

Would you like to see MIT do a better job of encouraging ethical thinking
among its students?

We think so too, and will do something about it by reviving a chapter of
Student Pugwash at MIT. We'll be holding an organizational meeting to get
this going --

Mon. Sept. 25, 5-6 PM
Room 10-280
(free pizza!)

Please bring your thoughts and enthusiasm to help make this a success!
Some of the topics we hope to address this school year are:

- The global environment (climate change, water quality & availability)
- Sustainable development
- Nuclear disarmament
- The internet - privacy, free speech, and the "digital divide"
- Biotechnology

For your information, I got this from the Student Pugwash web site
(www.spusa.org, then search for Student Pugwash):

Founded in 1979, Student Pugwash USA takes its name from our
parent organization, the Pugwash Conferences on
Science and
World Affairs. After the development of the hydrogen
bomb, Albert
Einstein, Bertrand Russell, and other eminent
scientists issued a
manifesto urging people to "remember your humanity
and forget the
rest." This manifesto led to a historic meeting which
took place in
1957 in Pugwash, Nova Scotia, where scientists from
around the
world made a bold stand for scientific responsibility
and peaceful
solutions in a world forever changed by weapons of
mass destruction.
Pugwash and Joseph Rotblat, one of its founders,
received the 1995
Nobel Peace Prize for this important and
world-changing work.
There are over 20 national Student and Young Pugwash
groups
                      around the world.

The mission of Student Pugwash USA is to promote the
socially
responsible application of science and technology in
the 21st century.
As a student organization, Student Pugwash USA
encourages
young people to examine the ethical, social, and
global implications of
science and technology, and to make these concerns a
guiding focus
of their academic and professional endeavors.

Thanks and I hope to see you there.

Peace,

Jason
