ADVICE ON ORAL PRESENTATIONS
at the Writing and Communication Center

In response to the increased attention to oral presentation at MIT in general
and in Communication Intensive courses in particular, the Writing and
Communication Center (14N-317, 253-3090) is offering two services to help all
members of the MIT community prepare and practice oral presentations:
individual consultations to help in all stages of planning and preparing oral
presentations and practice sessions for delivering the oral presentation and
receiving feedback about the performance.

Individual Consultations About Preparing Your Oral Presentations

The Center's professional staff of writing consultants will offer advice about
any aspect or stage of preparing oral presentations and visuals. Among the
issues that they can advise you about are the following: finding an
appropriate
topic, choosing organizational strategies, drafting and revising, developing
and supporting your ideas, understanding your audience, selecting the best
form
of delivery (e.g., memorizing the speech, reading it, using outlines or note
cards), developing overheads or other visuals, and handling stage fright.

Simply call the Center (253-3090) during its open hours to set up an
appointment to receive advice

Weekly Practice Sessions

Once you have completed your preparations and your oral presentation is ready
for a trial run, the Center has a new service that can help you polish your
delivery, a weekly practice session throughout the academic year, a chance to
practice your oral presentation in front of the Center's director, Dr. Steven
Strang. Every Wednesday from 3:00-4:30 p.m., he will be in classroom 14N-325
(three doors down from the Writing and Communication Center) to listen to and
give specific advice about oral presentations. In addition to issues such as
organization, word choice, and logic, Dr. Strang will focus on are the
following: voice projection, pronunciation, use of visuals, gestures, stage
presence, movement, and stage fright. The room has a screen and an overhead
projector will be available.

All MIT undergraduate and graduate students, staff, faculty, and spouses may
use this new service. Simply come to room 14N-325 (no appointment is needed)
on Wednesdays at 3:00 p.m.

As with all services at the Writing and Communication Center, these are free.

The Center is open Monday through Thursday, 9:00 a.m.-9:00 p.m.; Friday 9:00
a.m.-6:00 p.m., and Sunday, 5:00-9:00 p.m. It closes every day from noon-1:00
p.m. for lunch.
