Dear Friends,
First, let me thank the new and old members for attending the Sexism at MIT
session on Thursday. While the session itself was a success, it also
revealed the amount and scope of work to be done, which will be something
the Social Justice Cooperative will take on. Anyway, justice has this
uncanny characteristic of requiring constant attention to achieve and
maintain. My analogy is that the second law works all the time to increase
entropy/chaos, so if we want things in a certain way, we have to apply the
first law and exert energy to make things right, again and again. It can
be done, but requires vigilance.
As such, the topic of peace and justice spans many issues. This is meant
to be a pseudo-introduction to the peace2 discussion list. Members use
their own discretion about posting events/opinions/discussions/announcements
to anything deemed related to peace. In the near future, we will start
another list for events and announcements only, while peace2 will stay as
the discussion list. We'll keep you posted. If you want to (un)subscribe,
please contact me directly <auyeung@mit.edu>. Thanks!
People who had an opportunity to attend other events on Thursday, please
feel free to bring back information and reaction to the list. Also, there
is a developing issue involving the Columbian military (funded by the US,
with more coming from Clinton), Occidental Oil (how will multi-nationals
change their image if these things keep happening), and Al gore (supposed
environmentalist and more: we'll see how he handles this one...); this is
the subject of the forward below. There will be a teach-in this weekend
sponsored by Rainforest Action Network.
Finally, the info on the two books on the board are:
* Virginia Valian, "Why so Slow? the Advancement of Women," 1998.
* Frances Conley, "Walking out on the Boys," 1996?
