ANTI-BIOTECH ACTIVISTS MEETING
*******************************************
TUESDAY, AUGUST 29, 2000
7pm - 9pm
Central Square Public Library
45 Pearl St., Cambridge, MA
Boston Resistance Against Genetic Engineering is pulling together a meeting of
genetic engineering activists from across eastern Massachusetts to bring
everyone up to date on one existing campaign, one new campaign and possible
ideas for making biotechnology a topic of the October 3 Presidential Debate
tentatively scheduled to take place at UMASS Boston. We will also be
brainstorming ideas for addressing the growing medical biotechnology presence
in the Greater Boston area.
Details...
The People's Earth Network Letter Writing Campaign.
Begun last year, this listserv alert project has convinced over ten organic
food companies to remove genetically engineered ingredients from their
products. Their efforts played a major role in decision of Whole Foods (owner
of Bread & Circus) to eliminate g.e. ingredients from their product lines.
SAFE FOODS Campaign
New England's 2nd largest supermarket chain Shaw's/Star Market is owned by
JSainsbury, a UK company which pledged to eliminate genetically engineered
ingredients from their store brands in March 1999 during the height of British
opposition to genetic engineering. This supermarket campaign will focus on
educating the public and forcing Shaw's to be the first U.S. supermarket chain
to eliminate genetically engineered ingredients.
October 3 Presidential Debate
Both parties receive substantial funding from the biotechnology industry. One
idea we have is to research which corporations gave what and how the lack of
U.S. regulations regarding biotechnology relate to one another. Please bring
your ideas!
