Salt of the Earth (International Union of Mine, Mill and Smelter
Workers, 1954).
Directed by Herbert J. Biberman. With Will Geer, Rosaura Revueltas, Juan
Chacn, David Wolfe.
Produced by people on Hollywood's blacklist, this drama is based on an
actual miners' strike in New Mexico. It is a radical political statement
on industrial working conditions and union organizing. It makes a strong
feminist statement as well, for it is the wives of the striking miners
who spur their reluctant husbands to collective action.
After the film was completed, under difficult circumstances, it was all
but banned in the United States.
