Join us for an exciting evening of discussion and screenings of work - a
retrospective and celebration of 11 years of the Boston-based Mirror
Project. From Bogotá, Colombia to Boston, MA see the products of Mirror
Project founder Roberto Arévalo and his teen students. Arévalo will examine
the ways in which the production of social documentary can help individuals
of different social classes and educational backgrounds understand and
analyze their lives and the social structures that impact them. He will
draw from his own experiences growing up in Colombia, working in New York
City as a recent immigrant, learning to produce social documentaries and
teaching inner-city youth to create videos about their everyday lives. All
Mirror Project documentaries screen first in the neighborhood where they
were created and later at theaters, museums, festivals and universities
nationwide.
The following documentaries will be presented and discussed by the director
himself:
"I'm the Man" by 14 year old Woodson Michell, 1995, 17:00
Somerville Mystic Housing Developments
Looking through the viewfinder of a VHS camera, Woodson follows his
fourteen-year-old best friend Marc Celestin. Marc takes us on a journey of
humor and pride, sharing his home and neighborhood at the Somerville Mystic
Housing Development. Marc displays his creative talents-playing his drums,
bass guitar, and customizing his own basketball court - while he tells us
about his philosophy of life.
"The Idea of a Song" by 17 year old Emily Twombly, 2001, 30:00
Watertown, MA
A self-reflective video where Emily, with a small digital camera, explores
the importance of relationships among teenagers, the high school rock
scene, and the role of tattoos in the life of young people. This video
captures the male and female perspective on their own emotions and those of
the opposite sex.
Porvenir/Future by Roberto Arévalo, 2000, 27:00 Porvenir, Colombia,
South America (Spanish with English subtitles)
Porvenir/Future is the name of a rural, mountain village on the
banks of the polluted Magdelena river in Colombia. The uneven flow of the
river
reflects the pulse of its four hundred inhabitants. Adobe houses, a dirt
road, cotton fields and goats make up the daily landscape. A
vibrant yet fragile community thrives against all odds. Come witness how
cinematography and the synchronicity of life unfolds in Porvenir.
