Saturday April 12th
registration • 12pm-1pm
block one • 1pm-2:30pm
* mental health allies Christine Borges and Lena Asmar
* room 206.
This workshop seeks to answer questions and provide
support and resources to mental health allies. Allies
include providers, family members, friends,
colleagues, and anyone who interacts with those living
with a mental illness. Discussion will include topics
such as: stereotypes and perceptions of mental
illness; challenges in being a mental health ally;
and, strategies for supporting others while
maintaining one's own self-care. Information on
outside referrals and resources will be provided.

in this workshop, participants will learn how to cut
linoleum blocks & make linoleum prints. the basic
skills used in linoleum blockprinting can also be
applied to wood blockprinting, silkscreening,
stencilling, & more. participants will have an
opportunity to see finished linoleum prints, as well
as make their own (time permitting). the workshop is
designed to teach participants how to use cutting
tools safely, how to transfer an image to a block, how
to utilize negative space, & how to print. we can also
talk about multi-color printing & the block as an art
object.

* Race, Racism, and You! (first half) tom, steven, &

Join us in exploring race and racism, how it affects
you, and how to challenge it in your daily life. In
this three-hour workshop, we will examine the meanings
of race in modern America and explore activist
approaches to challenging racism. Questions we will
ask: How is race defined? Who defines it? How is
race experienced? Who experiences it? What is its
role
in our lives as individuals, members of groups, and of
society at large.
This is one workshop that spans two blocks. Please
plan to attend the workshop in its entirety.

this workshop provides a (queer- and trans- friendly,
gender neutral,sex-positive, anti-racist) overview of
childhood sexual abuse and incest and the survivors
movement... including definitions, statistics, and
discussion of the effects of childhood sexual abuse
and the coping mechanisms used by survivors. we
will look at the ways in which childhood sexual abuse
and incest are related to other oppressions, both on
an individual and structural level.
issues of memory (dissociation, repressed and
recovered memories of abuse) are also explored, and a
brief history of the survivors movements (and the
subsequent backlash) will be presented. this workshop
is open to all who want to learn about childhood
sexual abuse and how we can posivitely channel our
efforts to work against it.

learn the basics of crocheting, how to read a pattern
and begin making your own radical gear! the radical
crocheting workshop will begin with the basics of
crocheting: what needle to use, what yarn to use,
different types of stitches, how to read a
pattern(briefly). we won't have time to finish
anything too intricate, but you can start it here and
finish it at home. i will bring some needles, some
yarn and some patterns, but if you have any of those
items and want to bring them, please do!

this workshop is designed primarily as a discussion
amongst people living with mental illness, though
allies are welcome provided they prioritize the
space to people with mental illness. we will discuss
all the hot topics--what we want from our allies, how
to make & stick to boundaries, how to effectively
manage the mental health care system, the great
medication debate, how & when to “come out” as
mentally ill, how to provide useful self-care, & how
our lives mentally ill people intersect with out lives
as students, parents, organizers, activists, etc. this
discussion will have ground rules to help create a
safe space environment & is facilitated by a mentally
ill artist & organizer.

First we’ll talk about choices in birthing, and how to
decide what you want. The realities of how doctors and
midwives are trained, and the constraints on them as
they practice, and what a doula can do for you.
Settings for birth: hospital, home, or out of
hospital birth center, and finally, realistic
strategies for getting what the care you want
including what questions to ask and how hospitals
work. Next we’ll talk about how to be helpful to a
woman who invites you to attend her birth: what to
expect, practical ways to help her cope with labor,
and what to do, and not do, after the baby comes.

Wanna learn how to knit? Already know, but tired of
only being able to knit scarves? Come and learn the
basic knit and purl stitches, and then we'll move on
to knitting patterns into stuff, and a simple pattern
for a hat. If you know a lot about knitting, feel
free to come and share your knowledge, because hats
with stars in them is about the extent of mine.

this will be a community meeting with guidelines and
facilitators to start an open dialogue about dealing
with sexual assault in the community. it will also
deal with building a safe community of people who
support surviors and discussion about guidelines for
assaultors. pretty much its an open dialogue with
respectful boundaries open to anyone who is interested
in taking about this matter and confronting sexual
assault.
*this workshop is not gender exclusive and we welcome
surviors of sexual assault of any gender.

Basic instruction and practice in a number of
protesting skills and tactics. From banner and flag
usage to dearresting and more.

Tired of your wardrobe? Don't want to look like
everyone else? Like a shirt, but not the way it
fits? You don't have to buy lots of new clothes that
cost
a bundle even though they were made in slave
conditions to have fun getting dressed and feel good
about your style. Come get ideas about how you can
make your clothes new and exciting, learn some basic
clothes altering techniques, and find treasure in
other people's trash.

The most efficient - and for many, only - way to
garden in a city is using containers. In this
workshop we will explore many options for container
gardening as well as some of the practical aspects
involved in container gardening.
Included:Windowsill herb gardens,tropical flowers,
temperate flowers, and fruits and vegetables in pots.
General basics such as soil, watering, and placement,
Organic pest control for small spaces, Seed-starting
basics.
* Do’s and don’ts for significant others of sexual

This workshop will help participants learn to
understand and care for survivors, avoid unknowingly
continuing emotional trauma, cope with post-traumatic
stress disorder, learn self-care techniques to avoid
secondary trauma, etc.

learn some conversational Chinese (Mandarin), but you
also get to use a first grader's chinese school book
filled with communist propaganda!
Also, listen to Chinese punk rock, and hear/see other
bits of current Chinese culture. Plus, learn how to
woo a pretty boy (or girl) in Chinese!
Impress your friends with your new Chinese skills! Be
the coolest kid on your street!

in this workshop, we will touch on everything you may
have forgotten from your junior high english classes,
but we’ll have fun with it! refresh your knowledge of
basic grammar rules (subject/verb agreement,
punctuation, the difference between an adverb & an
adejective, etc) & learn to use them creatively! we
will do a few short writing exercises designed to help
participants identify & hone their individual writing
stylesd, & we will work on editing our own & each
other’s work for maximum effect, all while seeking to
banish that pesky inner critic. led by two midwestern
english class superstars & former zinesters.

* room 311. in certain situations, the only actions
possible involve the use of force, perhaps because
more diplomatic methods have failed or have been
ignored. this workshop will focus on ways to diffuse
a violent confrontation, protecting oneself first and
if possible the attacker as well. no special clothing
or supplies are needed, anyone is welcome.

In this workshop we will use various materials to make
blank books, focusing on the stab-sewn method of
binding (although if people want to learn other
methods, we can explore those too). There are so many
possibilities for making beautiful books out of any
materials you choose, so come learn and be inspired.
* Breathe, Feel, and Relax:Introduction to Hatha Yoga

Come and experience the simultaneously calming and
energizing effects of Hatha yoga. Through guided
postures and breathing exercises, we will practice
connecting with the body, the breath, and the moment.

The chess workshop is geared towards the advanced
beginner, who after mastering the moves and simple
concepts of chess (forks, pins, discoveries, skewers,

workshop will begin with several chess puzzles and end
with a simultaneous playing to put to use the concepts

This workshop intends to present a feminist approach
to female anatomies, which includes the many different
relationships people have to female anatomy. There is
no one way the clit, vagina, or other reproductive
organs are supposed to look or work. All genders are
welcome at this workshop. This workshop will take a
clit-centered approach to the female reproductive
system, emphasizing sexuality over reproduction as we
learn about breast health, the anatomy of the female
orgasm, how menstruation and hormones work, charting
the menstrual cycle, and sexual pleasure.

So, your single, queer, or otherwise don’t want to get
pregnant that traditional sex way. how should you

successful!) experience with low budget, diy
insemination.

this workshop will have two basic components: 1) a
how-to session on making zines, where we will be
sharing information based on our own experiences --
bring lots of questions! and 2) a facilitated
discussion about why zines are important as a form of
DIY media and art. why do we make and read
zines? **no previous knowledge necessary, just
curiosity and enthusiasm.

room 109 This workshop covers the basics of vaginal
health, including common infections (causes and
treatments), sexually transmitted diseases (signs,
symptoms, causes, treatment and prevention),
birth control & safer sex options and alternatives,
the menstrual cycle, “feminine hygiene” alternatives,
what to expect from gynecological visits (and your
rights), and last but not least, sexual pleasure and
masturbation!
We believe that everyone has the right take back their
health from the hands of America’s corporate medical
establishment. This information is intended
to facilitate conversations about basic sexual
well-being. We are not doctors, we are just sharing
our knowledge and experiences and hopefully we can
give participants resources to help you learn more.
All genders are welcome at this workshop. We simply
request that all attendees encourage and create a safe
and healthy environment to discuss these sometimes

worry about shrinking wildlife habitats and want to do

involve critters in helping you organically manage
pests and keep your garden as healthy and sustainable

in the beginners’ class, giving us a chance to expand
our knowledge & address questions in more depth.
Topics include fertility awareness (for self-knowledge
as well
as to facilitate or prevent pregnancy), the many
different ways of getting pregnant, birthing options,
midwifery 101, self-examinations, menstrual extraction
& abortion options, herbalism for the childbearing
years, sexual health and pleasure.

One in four LGBTI will be battered in their lifetime,
yet domestic violence continues to be closeted in
queer communities. This workshop will present an
overview and strategies for Queer/Transgender
communities to understand and acknowledge domestic
violence as well as ways for community members to
support survivors and speak out against domestic
violence through a combination of presentation and
discussion.

The workshop will include the basics of how to write a
grant. Beginners will learn the skills and art of
grant writing. The essential components of developing
a proposal will be discussed.
Emphasis will be given on how to write a reader
friendly proposal, and will include all the necessary
facts. Examples will be drawn from my prior research
work on tropical diseases, women’s health, HIV/AIDS,
which have received grants.
