FREE and open to the public
A forum for students, professionals, and academics in the Northeast to
engage in dialogue about the impact of science and technology on society.
Through a mix of panels, lectures, roundtable discussions and social
events, the conference is designed to cover a range of perspectives
challenging participants to formulate their own opinion on a matter, not be
indoctrinated by a particular stance. This year's conference will focus on
the role of science and technology in conflict from the development of
weapons of mass destruction to electronic surveillance and their
implications for issues of security, freedom, environment and ethics in
general.
Student Pugwash is a student affiliate of the Pugwash Conferences on
Science and World Affairs, recipients of the 1995 Nobel Peace Prize. We are
a group of undergraduate and graduate students dedicated to promoting the
socially responsible use of science and technology.
Panel topics:
-- The State and the Academy: National Security vs. Scientific Openness
-- The Toll of Conflict on the Environment
-- Civil liberties in Wartime
Keynote speaker:
-- Professor John Holdren of Harvard University, the Teresa and John Heinz
Professor of Environmental Policy and Director of the Program on Science,
Technology, and Public Policy at the Kennedy School as well as Professor of
Environmental Science and Public Policy in the Department of Earth and
Planetary Sciences.
Featured speakers:
-- Dr. Charles Vest, President of MIT
-- Dr. Sheila Widnall, Institute Professor at MIT, former Secretary of the
Air Force under the Clinton administration
-- Dr. Barry Bloom, Dean of the Faculty at the Harvard School of Public Health
The conference begins at 6:00pm on Friday, February 21 with a panel
discussion, followed by a full day of panel and roundtable discussions and
a keynote address on Saturday. Lunch will be provided on Saturday for
those who register in advance.
