Description: President Bush is rapidly stepping up U.S. military
involvement in Colombia in the name of fighting his 'war on
terrorism' ... But what are the actualroots of the conflict in
Colombia? What are the real goals of U.S. military strategy? What is
the connection between the U.S. neo-liberal economic plans for Latin
America and its military policy? What is the Free Trade Area of the
Americas (FTAA) and what impact will it have on the people of
Colombia? And why did the 'war on drugs' Washington has been waging in
Colombia get justified as a 'war on terrorism' after September 11,
2001?
Anna Hendricks is just returning from Ecuador where she has been working
with a campesino organization to mobilize 10,000 campesinos to come to Quito
in protest of the annual FTAA (Free Trade Area of the Americas) Ministerial
Meetings from October 31 to November 1. Anna first went to Nicaragua in
1996 as a 14 year old to visit the sister community of Bostonsssssssss
Church of the
Covenant. She visited Colombia in January with Witness for Peace and has
been arrested twice for protesting U.S. policy toward Colombia.
Annasssssssss father, Newell Hendricks, is music director at Church of the
Covenant. He has visited Nicaragua six times leading him to look deeply
into the impact of neo-liberal economics. He has studied Spanish in Guatemala
and this past summer traveled to Colombia with a Witness for Peace delegation
where he conducted analytical interviews with the chief of the Uwa tribe,
a Colombian Congressman, the former leader of a guerrilla military unit, a
key figure in peace negotiations and other prominent personalities.
