Press Release: Peace Process and Justice: Deir Yassin Remembered
WHERE: Copley Square, Boston, MA.
DATE: April 8th, 2000
TIME: 10:00 p.m.
On April 8th, human right activists, American-Arabs, Jewish
groups,Palestinians from all over the country and all those concerned with
the prospect for a viable peace in the Middle East will gather at Copley
Square in Boston for a candle light vigil to commemorate the massacre of Deir
Yassin. On that day in 1948, over one hundred men, women and children were
systematically killed by Zionist paramilitary forces fighting to establish
the state of Israel. While it is only one of over four hundred Palestinians
villages that were depopulated or destroyed in 1948, the massacre of Deir
Yassin today lives as a symbol of the expulsion of Palestinian people from
their homeland, and of their determination to struggle for justice.
The issue of refugees is at the heart of the final status negotiations
between Israel and the Palestinians. The tortuous experience of the interim
period has revealed that it is impossible to reach a viable and stable peace
without establishing justice. This cannot only include the Palestinians
living in the West Bank and Gaza Strip but must also incorporate all those
expelled from their homeland. Today over 4.8 million refugees, of which 3.5
million refugees living in Lebanon, Syria and Jordan, are calling for
restitution and return.
At 10:00 p.m April 8th, we will be gathering at Copley Square to reiterate
our support for Palestininian inalienable rights. The vigil will come at
the end of a full day major international conference hosted by Boston
University School of Law on Palestinian Refugee Rights.
