To encourage student involvement in the events of the coming
year, we are sponsoring nation-wide teach-ins. We urge
students to hold events to discuss government policy affecting
their civil liberties, and their security if there is war between the
U.S. and Iraq.

We propose that teach-ins take place around commemoration of
September 11, or October 7, the 1st anniversary of the campaign
in Afghanistan, to examine past and future actions in the war on
terrorism.

The teach-in web site, www.shapeyourworld.info, includes
planning materials like articles & research, possible agendas,
and talking points on civil liberties, nuclear weapons, and Iraq.

We are looking for students, action groups, faculty, staff,
campus ministries, and/or community members to plan and
enact these events with our support. We encourage networking
and collaborating between schools if desired for teach-in
activities.

Why Your Campus Should Participate:

How will the Issues Affect Students?

On Civil Liberties, as a result of the USA PATRIOT act:

Titles of books bought or borrowed from bookstores & libraries
can be demanded by the FBI.
Government officials can search a person's living space without
notification to that individual.

On war with Iraq and international security:

The INS has initiated SEVIS(Student and Exchange Visitor
Information System) to surveil international students. National
Commission on Terrorism experts have stated that this action
intimidates specifically Muslim students and is not productive in
preventing terrorism.

Potential war between the U.S. and Iraq could result in use of
nuclear weapons on the soil of either country or their neighbors.
Ground warfare would cause loss of life for Iraqi civilians and
U.S. troops. Student voices are needed in the current debate!

Are democratic and non-violent methods for regime change in
Iraq a better alternative, as they were in removing dictators in
Yugoslavia and Indonesia?

Please join us in this effort!
