hello,
the nation-wide wave of justice for janitors campaign has been going on for about sixteen years. as for specifics to the boston area, check out this website,
http://ww.seiu.org/building/janitors/campaign_central/j4jcampaigns_boston.cfm
the three biggest issues (at least in my interpretation) are:
-no opportunities to full-time work (about 75% of the janitors are part-time right now)
-as a result, no access to health insurance and certain other benefits
-very low wages (compared to other cities, boston's high cost of living, etc.)
also check out the jobs with justice site at http://www.massjwj.net that has
up-to-date strike bulletins as the contract expired at the end of august with negotiations breaking down. the mayor intervened to prolong the negotiation and community and campus support is more crucial than ever for the union demands to be made (the demands that already have the support of so many prominent community members)
i am sorry that it was unclear before what the campaign is and if there are still questions, please feel free to contact me. thanks.
peace.
